In early November, my dad came home from one of his near-daily bike rides exclaiming over how the previous day’s combination of sun, wind and ice had created some wildly shaped ice formations down by the Glenmore Reservoir.

{ For those of you not from Calgary, the Glenmore Reservoir is the main source of drinking water for our city. It is also used for recreational purposes, with kayaking, rowing, sailing and canoeing on the water, fishing, a paved path all the way around its edges for walking, running, biking and – my personal favourite – rollerblading, and two large parks on its banks. Swimming is not allowed, however if you fall in accidentally, nobody could stop you from splashing around a little bit… Or so I hear. I’m not saying I’ve experienced this myself, as an eight-year-old. But I’m not not saying that either. }

My dad and I share a love for photography, and he said to me, “We gotta go back down there later today and take some photos!”. Despite a fairly packed schedule, I agreed. Taking a break to get some fresh air, snap some pictures, and spend some time with my dad was a combination I couldn’t say no to.

Shortly after 3:30 that afternoon, we made the 5-minute drive from our house to South Glenmore Park and set out on the pathway with cameras in hands.

My dad had not steered me wrong – these were some of the craziest, most unique ice and snow formations I’d ever seen, and so close to home! We wandered along the Reservoir for almost 45 minutes despite the cold and wind, and were lucky to catch some ‘golden hour’ lighting as well, making the photos even prettier.

After our adventure, we made a stop at Starbucks to grab some drinks to help us warm up, and then headed home, full of excitement over what we’d experienced.

Have you ever seen anything like this? I sure hadn’t, and I was so happy I’d said yes to this mini adventure with my dad. The worst part was narrowing down which photos to post!

Enjoy the short-list here…

  1. Howdy, I believe your site could possibly be having internet
    browser compatibility problems. Whenever I take a look at your web
    site in Safari, it looks fine but when opening in IE, it’s got some overlapping issues.
    I just wanted to give you a quick heads up!
    Other than that, fantastic website!
