Late this past fall, after returning from Asia, I moved to the college town of Truro, Nova Scotia because my boyfriend is attending a pre-veterinary program at the school here. Nova Scotia is a beautiful province, and Truro and the surrounding area is well known for a phenomenon called the tidal bore. However, there isn’t much to be said for the town of Truro itself. It has a population of 12 500 people, and isn’t small enough to be one of those adorably tiny “small towns”, but isn’t big enough to boast a lot of activities, sites or things to do. Coming from Calgary, a city of over one million people, it’s been an adjustment. That being said, a huge bright spot for me here is an area in town called Victoria Park. Victoria Park is a 1000-acre (4 square kilometres) green space which features a brook (Lepper Brook), two waterfalls (Waddell Falls and Joseph Howe Falls), and a huge system of pathways for walking, running or cycling. There’s an outdoor pool and bandstand for the summer, picnic areas, a playground and tennis courts. The pathways wind through the heavily forested area and Truro’s reservoir, and there are several interesting locations to stop at, including a wishing well, Jacob’s Ladder (an incredibly steep set of stairs – 175 steps to be exact), cute boardwalks leading to gazebos and little wooden shelters, and a lookout point. We’ve spent quite a few Saturdays exploring the area, and I absolutely adore it. If you ever happen to be passing through Truro, you wouldn’t be disappointed by a stop at Victoria Park!
