Around the time I was photographing my first (and so far only) wedding last fall, my friend Alyssa reached out to me in regards to taking some promotional photos for her husband Alex’s in-home music + recording studio.

I’m more of a landscape (and occasional still-life lifestyle) type of photographer – I find people tricky. As such, when Alyssa asked me if this is something I would do, I was hesitant – but slightly less so than I was about photographing the wedding. At least if I screwed this up, I could go back over to their place and try again (and again, and again if needed). Plus, it would be good experience.

And so, I said yes, and found myself at their house in Calgary on a sunny winter day in December 2019. Below are some of the images I captured (shout out to Alyssa for modelling as the “student”), as well as a music video that I give my boyfriend Holden full credit for. He spent hours splicing the video and sound clips together to create a seamless finished product.

You can find Alex Olesen Music Services on Facebook and YouTube for various instrument lessons + recording studio packages.

I hugely appreciated this opportunity, and the trust that Alyssa and Alex put in me. ‘People’ photography isn’t something I’m sure I’d do again anytime soon, at least not without some proper training and equipment, however if shooting with me is something you’re interested in, please feel free to reach out
